The best part of lightning grader is that I already have all of my evaluations made as word documents and all I have to do is convert the file to a PDF, upload it, make the answer key, let the students take the assessment on their computers or paper. I get their grades and grade reports instantaneously. This is great to see who got what questions wrong as soon as the evaluation is done! I have tried other systems and they all want you to upload your questions one at a time into question banks and that is just not feasible for the number of classes and tests I have.

Lightning Grader is an invaluable tool for the classroom. I’m a teacher in a public high school where I have an average of 33 kids per class. Grading use to be a nightmare but with Lightning Grader, I’m able to grade tests in minutes and get data reports to help me re-align my lesson plans. Since using Lightning Grader, I save an average of two hours per test given and I get data reports that help me drive instruction.

Lightning Grader is great for reports and data collection. I use all of the reports but my favorite one is the Class answer Item Analysis. This lets you see each question as a bar graph so you can see at a glance which questions were missed most often, and what their answers were if they got them wrong. This same report gives you a question by question list of which students got which questions incorrect. This allows me to instantaneously work with students in groups that got the same questions incorrect, saving the time and energy of the students that got them right!

I use Lightning Grader to assess vocabulary via the web, grade paper multiple choice tests (bubble sheets) for Science/Social Studies, and I assign multiple choice/short answer tests via paper which I scan to email for Reading. I use Lightning Grade to assess in a variety of ways. For Vocabulary, I assign the test online. Students rotate through on the computers taking the assessment. Students waiting their turn are completing a different assessment or assignment. This allows me to “kill two birds with one stone” and is an efficient use of class time. Students are motivated by using the computers. I also use multiple choice bubble sheets and short answers to assess Reading, Science, and Social Studies. Being able to scan the tests and send the results to my computer has saved me countless hours of grading this year! Students are less intimidated when they see standardized tests, since multiple test formats are used regularly in the classroom.

I use LG for multiple choice portions of my tests, since I only need a normal sheet of paper and not an expensive scantron form to make an answer sheet, I have been able to cut down on the cost and time associated with testing. We previously used scantron machines, they are now over 10 years old and would never consistently work. Since we’ve started using Lightning Grader, I have been able to generate reports that I use to track student progress, to spot errors I’ve made, and to analyze specific question. This year, I was rated as an accomplished, the reports I’ve generated using LG helped me reach that rating, by providing evidence of how I am using data to help my students. LG has also allowed me to get tests back faster to my students, by cutting down the grading time, which allows them to do test corrections while the mistakes are fresh in their minds.
